Why This Butterfly Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

This Butterfly piece was drawn around a butterfly with wings held open, each panel showing graded colour from deep centre to translucent edge, antennae and body picked out in fine detail, then coloured in iridescent blues and violets shifting toward warm orange at the wing edges. It keeps a delicate and alive note from edge to edge. Butterfly motifs work in the transitional spaces of a home — the places that do not need a theme, just something with life in it. It is aimed at hosts who care about what the food arrives on. Designed for hallways and entryways, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference cp016-2. Wing panels are worked as separate colour zones, so the shimmer shifts as you move past the finished piece That is the through-line of the whole design.

butterfly motifs work in the transitional spaces of a home — the places that do not need a theme, just something with life in it. Given a spot in hallways and entryways, the delicate colouring settles the whole corner.

A DOTZSO tray is meant to be worked at an easy pace and then actually used to carry things. Box contents run to the printed wooden tray, DOTZSO resin drills, a tray, a comfort-grip pen, a wax caddy and a pictorial reference sheet.

The drilled face gets the attention, but the construction does the work. Solid tray body, seated drills, sealed surface.

Working the base in full drill is what makes the tray look made rather than part-finished.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Work through it gradually, then put the finished tray into rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Butterfly wooden tray kit arrive with all components included?

Yes. The Butterfly wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference cp016-2.

Does the Butterfly wooden tray kit hold together over time?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the Butterfly design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. The Butterfly coverage stays even with regular handling.

How do I maintain the Butterfly wooden tray kit long term?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the Butterfly palette, iridescent blues and violets shifting toward warm orange at the wing edges tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. The Butterfly surface asks for very little upkeep.

Is the drilling on the Butterfly design continuous?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The Butterfly artwork is drawn so that a butterfly with wings held open reads clearly at any distance. There is no printed fill showing through on the Butterfly design.

How long should I budget for the Butterfly design?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The Butterfly design is delicate and alive, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. The Butterfly pattern rewards steady work rather than rushing.

Which Butterfly size works for a dining setting?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 12.2×16.1 in format. Reference cp016-2.

Made this for our coffee table and get compliments on it constantly. It turned into something I actually want to display, not shove in a drawer. Would definitely buy again.

I’ve done a handful of these now and this one is up there with the best. Handles make it easy to carry from the kitchen to the couch. The butterfly pattern is what drew me in and it didn’t disappoint. I like having something mindful to do that doesn’t need a screen. I wish the printed legend was a little bigger. I’d recommend it with that one note.

Ordered on a Monday, had it by the weekend. Handles are sturdy, I can carry a full mug without worrying. Did most of it over a long weekend and it was such a pleasant way to pass the time. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Overall a good experience.

This was a fun change of pace from the usual canvas kits. Colors match the listing photo really closely. It’s on our ottoman and gets used for coffee every morning. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. The butterfly palette is softer in person, which I actually prefer. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

The handles make it feel like real serveware, not just a craft. Nice finish on the wood, not rough or unfinished. The sorting tray is shallow, drills spill out if you’re not careful. Nice mindful project – you can’t think about much else while you’re placing drills. The handles make it genuinely practical, not just decorative. Happy enough that I’d buy another.

The wood base is much sturdier than I expected. The winged pattern is what drew me in and it didn’t disappoint. Great value for what you get. A couple of the darker shades were hard to tell apart in low light. Happy enough that I’d buy another.

This was a step up from the smaller kits and I enjoyed it. I keep remotes and candles on it when it’s not in use. Took a bit longer to arrive than I expected. Worth it despite the small things.

My third kit from this shop and still really pleased. Handles are cut well and comfortable to actually carry. Really calming, repetitive work, and satisfying when a section is finished. The wax ran out before I finished and I had to use my own. It sits on the entry table and catches keys and mail. I love how the winged colors turned out. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

I saw this on the shop page and couldn’t talk myself out of it. The drill shapes were clean, not many chipped or stuck-together pieces. The butterfly colors are richer than the photos show. I set it up next to the window and do a few rows whenever the light is good. Worth the time it took. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’ll set wet glasses on it. Good enough that I’d buy another.

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. The butterfly pattern is what made me choose this one. Some colors had very few spare drills. It holds two mugs and a plate with room to spare. Still worth it overall.

I’m not usually a craft person, but this one converted me. Handles are cut well and comfortable to actually carry. Nothing arrived damaged, and everything was sealed properly. I worked on this with my mother and we both got absorbed in it. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’ll set wet glasses on it. Made one for my mother-in-law and she was delighted. So glad I added this one to my cart. Handles are cut well and comfortable to actually carry. Not something to soak or put in the dishwasher. I work on it while listening to an audiobook and the time just disappears. Small issues, but nothing that would stop me ordering again.

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. Wood feels solid, much better than the thin pressed board I’ve seen. There were extra drills left over in every color when I finished.
