Why This Dog Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

A Dog piece whose whole argument is a dog seated facing outward, ears relaxed, coat textured in layered strokes with the muzzle and eyes worked in finer detail, carried in warm tans and creams with darker shading at the ears and back. Read it from across the room and it is still warm and loyal. A dog portrait is one of the few decorations a household will keep permanently, which is why the detailing matters. It is aimed at hosts who care about what the food arrives on. Designed for entryways and family rooms, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference CP18. The eyes are worked last and in the finest drill available — that sequence is what gives the finished portrait expression Which is a harder thing to draw than it sounds.

a dog portrait is one of the few decorations a household will keep permanently, which is why the detailing matters. That is why entryways and family rooms is where it does its best work.

DOTZSO designed this one for slow sessions and long service, not for a display cabinet. Alongside the tray you get DOTZSO resin drills, a sorting tray, a comfort-grip applicator pen, a wax caddy and pictorial instructions.

The tray body is the part that matters. The printed surface is sealed after the drills are seated, so the tray takes hot mugs and plates without marking.

The base is drilled edge to edge, which keeps the tray looking deliberate at any angle.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Go through it one colour block at a time, then let the finished tray earn its keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there hidden extras needed for the Dog wooden tray kit?

Yes. The Dog wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference CP18.

Does the Dog wooden tray kit stand up to being used rather than just displayed?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the Dog design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. Light contact and normal carrying cause no lift on the Dog surface.

Can the Dog wooden tray kit get wet?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the Dog palette, warm tans and creams tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. The Dog surface is not built for immersion.

How even is the coverage on the Dog wooden tray kit?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The Dog artwork is drawn so that a dog seated facing outward reads clearly at any distance. The Dog face is drilled as a single continuous field.

Can the Dog wooden tray kit be done in stages?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The Dog design is warm and loyal, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. It works well as an ongoing project.

Which Dog size suits a small table?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 7.8×11.8 in format. Reference CP18.

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. The handles make it genuinely practical, not just decorative. Exactly what I was hoping for.

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. Wood feels solid, much better than the thin pressed board I’ve seen. I set it up next to the window and do a few rows whenever the light is good. Wish it came with a protective finish already applied. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

  3. Elijah M. –

Bought it as a housewarming gift and it was a hit. The wood is thick and finished smoothly, no splinters anywhere. Holds two mugs and a plate easily. If you like puppy designs, this is a good one to go for. Easy recommendation.

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. Drill colors are well separated, no squinting to tell two shades apart. Quiet Sunday mornings with this and a coffee is my favorite part of the week. I keep remotes and coasters on mine when it’s not in use. Very happy with this purchase.

I’ve wanted one of these trays for ages and finally made one. The drilled panel is recessed so it’s protected from spills. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. I did this with my best friend on the weekends and we both got into it. Great gift for anyone who likes hosting. Would order again despite the small issues.

This one took a bit more time and was worth it. The chart was large enough to read without squinting. The drills have a nice sparkle to them, not dull or flat. It became my end-of-day wind-down. It adds a nice handmade touch to the room. Really glad I bought it.

I’ve been doing these for about a year and this is a solid kit. Great gift for anyone who likes hosting. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.

Made this for our coffee table and get compliments on it constantly. The base is flat and doesn’t rock on the table. I listened to a podcast and the time went by without noticing. I chose this one for the dog look. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. It’s the kind of thing guests notice right away. Minor gripes aside, I’d buy it again.

The handles make it feel like real serveware, not just a craft. I’m a sucker for anything puppy-themed. Size is right for two mugs and a small plate. Nice mindful work that keeps you present. One small scuff on the wood when it arrived. Happy with it despite the small stuff.

Really impressed with how solid the tray feels. The drill design sits flush with the tray surface. Drill colors are well separated, no squinting to tell two shades apart. It’s a slow, quiet hobby and I like that about it. A few bags weren’t labeled as clearly as the rest. Everyone who sees it asks how long it took. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

Ordered on a Monday, had it by the weekend. Handles are sturdy, I can carry a full mug without worrying. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. I brought it on a week at the lake and finished most of it there. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

Bought it as a housewarming gift and it was a hit. The bottom has a slight grip to it so it doesn’t slide. It’s satisfying to watch a section fill in. It looks like a piece of decor, not a storage solution. Would make a great gift too.

Picked this up during a sale and it was money well spent. The wax and pen that came with it worked fine right out of the box. The puppy motif makes it feel special. It’s on the bathroom counter and looks intentional. It needed a wipe down before the first use. Mild quibbles, but a good purchase.

Really nice kit, especially for the money. The tray doesn’t flex or bow when I pick it up. The wax ran low before I finished the last section. It looks like a piece of decor, not a storage solution. Worth it, just go in with the right expectations.
