Why This Butterfly Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

What the design does with a butterfly with wings held open, each panel showing graded colour from deep centre to translucent edge, antennae and body picked out in fine detail is the point, and iridescent blues and violets shifting toward warm orange at the wing edges is where the colour settles. A delicate and alive piece, in the plain sense. Butterfly motifs work in the transitional spaces of a home — the places that do not need a theme, just something with life in it. It suits a household where practical pieces also have to look deliberate. Designed for hallways and entryways, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference CP14-2. Butterfly motifs work in the transitional spaces of a home — the places that do not need a theme, just something with life in it Which is the harder half of the job, and it is done here.

butterfly motifs work in the transitional spaces of a home — the places that do not need a theme, just something with life in it. It slots into hallways and entryways because the delicate palette is doing the talking.

DOTZSO assembles these kits so the process stays restful and the result is genuinely functional. The kit ships with the printed wooden tray, DOTZSO resin drills, a sorting tray, a comfort-grip pen, a wax caddy and printed instructions.

A tray stays out on the counter if it can take a hot mug. That is what the sealed surface and solid body are for.

The face is fully drilled, so the surface reflects evenly when a plate is set on it.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Take your time over it, then start using the tray instead of saving it for guests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the wooden tray kit supplied ready to work on, with no gaps?

Yes. The Butterfly wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference CP14-2.

Are the drills on the Butterfly design fixed firmly once completed?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the Butterfly design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. Give the seal a full cure and the Butterfly finish will hold.

Does the Butterfly wooden tray kit need special care?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the Butterfly palette, iridescent blues and violets shifting toward warm orange at the wing edges tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. A microfibre cloth works well on the Butterfly surface.

How thorough is the drill coverage on the Butterfly wooden tray kit?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The Butterfly artwork is drawn so that a butterfly with wings held open reads clearly at any distance. No background area of the Butterfly design is left bare.

How quickly can the Butterfly design be completed?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The Butterfly design is delicate and alive, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. The Butterfly pattern is easy to work in short bursts.

Which Butterfly size suits my table?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 12.2×16.1 in format. Reference CP14-2.

  1. Margaret R. (verified owner) –

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. The butterfly subject is rendered with more detail than I expected. Handles are sturdy, I can carry a full mug without worrying. Did most of it over a long weekend and it was such a pleasant way to pass the time. A couple of the darker shades were hard to tell apart in low light. The finished piece gets compliments from everyone who visits. Still a solid purchase.

Bought it for a rainy weekend and it was exactly what I needed. Nice finish on the wood, not rough or unfinished. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. I do it at the kitchen table while dinner simmers. I’m really proud of how it turned out. Overall a good experience.

  3. Kenneth L. (verified owner) –

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. There were extra drills left over in every color when I finished. Finish is even and the whole thing looks tidy once you’re done. I keep it set up on a side table and do a bit whenever I have ten minutes. Already ordered another one from DOTZSO. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.

I’ve wanted one of these trays for ages and finally made one. Packaging was tidy and nothing had spilled in transit. The drills have a nice sparkle to them, not dull or flat. I’ve been doing it in the evenings with my partner, we take turns on sections. The handles make it genuinely practical, not just decorative. Took a bit longer to arrive than I expected. Still worth it overall.

Really impressed with how solid the tray feels. The drilled panel is recessed so it’s protected from spills. The pen and wax worked fine, I didn’t need to dig out my own tools. It’s my go-to when I want something enjoyable that doesn’t take much thought. Made one for my mother-in-law and she was delighted. Perfect for a cozy evening project.

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. The drills came in labeled bags, which made sorting painless. I worked on this during my lunch breaks and it made the days feel better. It turned into something I actually want to display, not shove in a drawer. Perfect for a cozy evening project.

The handles make it feel like real serveware, not just a craft. The wood base has a nice weight to it, feels like real serveware. I wish the printed legend was a little bigger. I picked the winged version and the colors are lovely. Great gift for anyone who likes hosting. Still a solid purchase.

I use mine for morning coffee and it’s held up well. Each color was packed generously, I had plenty to spare. Quiet Sunday mornings with this and a coffee is my favorite part of the week. Holds two mugs and a plate easily. I picked the winged version and the colors are lovely. Happy customer here.

Finished it over a weekend and it looks great on the ottoman. The winged subject is rendered with more detail than I expected. The sorting tray is shallow, drills spill out if you’re not careful. The base is flat and doesn’t rock on the table. Makes a lovely breakfast-in-bed tray. I’d recommend it with that one note.

I’m a repeat DOTZSO customer at this point and this kit did not disappoint. Great value for what you get. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

I don’t usually leave reviews but this one deserved it. Glue coverage was even, no dry patches anywhere. I brought it on a week at the lake and finished most of it there. Definitely recommend giving it a try.

  13. Desiree Escobar (verified owner) –

Bought it as a starter kit for myself and it worked out great. The artwork looks even better in person than the photos. The surface is flat and level, glasses don’t wobble. I found it genuinely enjoyable rather than just something to finish. It holds two mugs and a plate with room to spare. The canvas had a faint mark from the printing on one edge. Small things aside, it’s a good buy.

Bought this to hold the remotes and it’s a huge improvement. The base is flat and doesn’t rock on the table. The winged motif makes it feel special. I worked on it a little each evening and it added up quickly. It looks beautiful with a candle and a book on it. Solid choice, no regrets.

Bought this as a reward for getting through a busy stretch at work. The symbols on the chart were easy to follow from start to finish. Each color was in its own pouch, clearly numbered. It’s become my evening ritual – an hour of this and I feel settled. Gave one as a housewarming gift and it was a favorite. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. Still glad I ordered it overall.
