Why This Dog Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

The subject is a dog seated facing outward, ears relaxed, coat textured in layered strokes with the muzzle and eyes worked in finer detail and the palette is warm tans and creams with darker shading at the ears and back; together they give this Dog design a warm and loyal feel. A dog portrait is one of the few decorations a household will keep permanently, which is why the detailing matters. It suits a dining table that gets used every evening. Designed for entryways and family rooms, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference CP18-2. The eyes are worked last and in the finest drill available — that sequence is what gives the finished portrait expression It is the kind of choice that reads as deliberate rather than decorative.

a dog portrait is one of the few decorations a household will keep permanently, which is why the detailing matters. That is what makes it a natural fit for entryways and family rooms rather than a statement piece.

Built by DOTZSO for daily use, this kit ends in an object that stays out on the counter. Inside the box you get a printed wooden tray with cut-in handles, DOTZSO resin drills, a sorting tray, a comfort-grip applicator pen, a wax caddy and pictorial instructions.

A tray stays out on the counter if it can take a hot mug. That is what the sealed surface and solid body are for.

Full coverage across the face gives the tray a consistent surface that reads well from above.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Finish it over a few evenings, then put the tray straight to work — it is designed for daily service, not shelf duty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Dog wooden tray kit cover everything from start to finish?

Yes. The Dog wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference CP18-2.

Will the drills stay put on the Dog design with daily handling?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the Dog design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. The Dog piece is robust once the final pass is complete.

Is the Dog wooden tray kit dishwasher safe?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the Dog palette, warm tans and creams tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. The Dog surface cleans up with minimal effort.

Is every part of the Dog design drilled?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The Dog artwork is drawn so that a dog seated facing outward reads clearly at any distance. Nothing on the Dog face is left as plain surface.

Does the Dog project suit short sittings?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The Dog design is warm and loyal, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. The Dog design suits working one colour block at a time.

Which Dog size is best for a small space?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 12.2×16.1 in format. Reference CP18-2.

This one caught my eye and I’m glad it did. Drill colors are well separated, no squinting to tell two shades apart. Good weight to the materials, it doesn’t feel cheap. I do it at the kitchen table while dinner simmers. I use it for serving when we have guests and it always gets noticed. The wood arrived with one small scuff on the side. I’d recommend it with that one note.

I wanted something I could pick up for twenty minutes at a time. Handles are cut well and comfortable to actually carry. The wax was a little stiff at first. My mother-in-law displays hers proudly. Happy with it despite the small stuff.

Came quickly and was packaged really well. Handles are cut well and comfortable to actually carry. Perfect for a cozy evening in when you want to keep your hands busy. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. The dog pattern is what made me choose this one. Would still recommend it.

  4. Susanna Merritt (verified owner) –

Finished it over a weekend and it looks great on the ottoman. Solid wood, much better than the pressed board versions. The handles make it genuinely useful, not just decorative. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Minor gripes aside, I’d buy it again.

  5. Don Ogden (verified owner) –

I use mine for morning coffee and it’s held up well. The kit came with a comfortable pen and enough wax for the whole project. I put on an audiobook and worked through it in a few sittings. Only one finish is available, which is limiting. Made one for my mother-in-law and she was delighted. Happy with it, with one small caveat.

  6. Winnie Keating (verified owner) –

The tray format is such a nice change of pace. I went with the puppy version and the colors are lovely. The drill panel sits flush with the tray surface. Only small gripe is that a few drills had little burrs on them. It’s made the space feel deliberately styled. I’d order it again knowing what I know now.

I use mine for morning coffee and it’s held up well. It looks beautiful with a candle and a book on it. The dog palette works really well with the design. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Worth it, just go in with the right expectations.

Gave one to my in-laws and they display it proudly. The tray has a proper raised rim, so nothing rolls off. I put on an audiobook and worked through it in a few sittings. It needed a wipe down before the first use. Would order again despite the small issues.

  9. Denise Lindsey (verified owner) –

Bought it as a starter kit for myself and it worked out great. The proportions work well for a dresser or a vanity. It was easy to pick up and put down without losing my place. The puppy motif is what drew me in. The rim could be a touch deeper. Worth it despite the small things.

Gave one to my in-laws and they display it proudly. Really nice piece to have out when people come over. The adhesive picked up a bit of dust while I was working over several days. Still worth it overall.

Bought this to do with my daughter on rainy days. The backing held up fine and didn’t peel anywhere. I worked on this during my lunch breaks and it made the days feel better. My mother-in-law displays hers proudly. Not something to soak or put in the dishwasher. Worth it despite the small things.

This was my first tray kit and I’d do another. Makes a lovely gift for anyone who hosts. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. The dog motif makes it feel special. Good kit overall, just a couple of small things.

This tray kit felt like a real step up from the flat canvases. I use it for serving when we have guests and it always gets noticed. The adhesive picked up a bit of dust while I was working over several days. A solid purchase with a couple of notes.

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. Handles are sturdy, I can carry a full mug without worrying. Keeps my hands busy while I watch something. Instructions were pretty minimal, though there are plenty of tutorials online. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

Made this as a wedding gift and it was a big hit. Nothing was damaged in shipping and the packaging was neat. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. I’m really proud of how it turned out. Still worth it overall.

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. I keep remotes and coasters on mine when it’s not in use. The canvas had a faint mark from the printing on one edge. Would order again despite the small issues.

  20. Celia Romero (verified owner) –

Honestly better quality than I expected for the price. The drill panel sits flush with the tray surface. Nice mindful project – you can’t think about much else while you’re placing drills. The tray included is on the small side. Would order again despite the small issues.

  21. Gwen Schmidt (verified owner) –

Bought it for the guest room and it looks lovely there. The drills came in labeled bags, which made sorting painless. It’s on our ottoman and gets used for coffee every morning. The wax ran out before I finished and I had to use my own. This is a lovely puppy piece for the price. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

  24. Victor Broussard (verified owner) –

My husband picked this out for me and he chose well. This is a lovely dog piece for the price. Each color was in its own pouch, clearly numbered. Really relaxing to do in the evening instead of scrolling. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’ll set wet glasses on it. Great value considering how many hours of enjoyment it gave me. Happy with it, with one small caveat.

This was my first diamond painting kit and I’m officially hooked. The dog colors are richer than the photos show. A couple of the darker shades were hard to tell apart in low light. It’s on the coffee table and gets used every morning. Overall happy, just a few small things.
