Why This Abstract Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

Overlapping colour fields drifting across the canvas, with soft edges where one tone bleeds into the next and a single line of movement threading through is what this Abstract design is about, and the palette keeps to muted terracotta, dusty blue and soft graphite resolved against an off-white ground. Nothing here overstates its case; the tone is simply modern and understated. Abstract canvases are the safest gift in this craft: they suit any room and carry no subject-matter risk. It is for anyone tired of trays that warp or blister within a season. Designed for contemporary interiors, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference CP13-1. abstract canvases are the safest gift in this craft: they suit any room and carry no subject-matter risk It is a small thing, and it is the reason the design holds together.

abstract canvases are the safest gift in this craft: they suit any room and carry no subject-matter risk. It is why the piece settles into contemporary interiors without needing the rest of the scheme to match it.

A DOTZSO tray is meant to be worked at an easy pace and then actually used to carry things. The package contains the printed wooden tray, DOTZSO resin drills, a tray, a comfort-grip applicator pen, a wax caddy and a full pictorial guide.

The tray body is the part that matters. The printed surface is sealed after the drills are seated, so the tray takes hot mugs and plates without marking.

Edge-to-edge drilling on the base is what stops the tray looking unfinished at the corners.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Work at whatever speed you like, then move the finished tray straight into service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What comes in the box with this Abstract wooden tray kit?

Yes. The Abstract wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference CP13-1.

Does the Abstract wooden tray kit stand up to being used rather than just displayed?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the Abstract design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. Nothing about the Abstract finish is fragile once it has been sealed.

Does the Abstract finish need any special treatment?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the Abstract palette, muted terracotta, dusty blue and soft graphite resolved against an off-white ground tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. Store it dry and the Abstract piece needs very little attention.

How does the Abstract wooden tray kit handle background areas?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The Abstract artwork is drawn so that overlapping colour fields drifting across the canvas reads clearly at any distance. The whole Abstract surface carries the drilled finish.

How many evenings will the Abstract design take?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The Abstract design is modern and understated, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. The Abstract pattern builds up quickly once the colour blocks start.

Is there a compact Abstract wooden tray kit?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 9.8×13.8 in format. Reference CP13-1.

Bought it as a housewarming gift and it was a hit. Handles make it easy to carry from the kitchen to the couch. Each color was packed generously, I had plenty to spare. Instructions were pretty minimal, though there are plenty of tutorials online. The contemporary detail comes together really nicely once it’s finished. It’s the kind of project that feels creative without being stressful. Great gift for anyone who likes hosting. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.

Ordered this on a quiet Sunday and it arrived faster than expected. I’ve already had several people ask where it came from. Shipping took a few days longer than I expected. Happy with it despite the small stuff.

Been doing these for about two years and this kit is solid. The proportions work well for a dresser or a vanity. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’ll set wet glasses on it. I did it in short bursts and it never felt rushed. Would still recommend it.

Came across this while looking for craft ideas and bought it that day. The drill design sits flush with the tray surface. It’s the kind of thing guests notice right away. I’d have liked it a size larger. Mild quibbles, but a good purchase.

  5. Margarita Hefner (verified owner) –

Something about a functional project makes it more satisfying. The base is flat and doesn’t rock on the table. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. The abstract motif is what drew me in. Really happy with the end result. Worth it, just go in with the right expectations.

  6. Myron Duffy (verified owner) –

I had a gift card burning a hole in my pocket and this was the pick. If you like contemporary designs, this is a good example. The finish looks polished rather than homemade. The tray included is on the small side. Really calming, repetitive work, and satisfying when a section is finished. Still glad I ordered it overall.

  7. Armando Gentile (verified owner) –

I’ve tried a few brands and this one holds up well. The drills arrived clean, not stuck together in clumps. The kit included more than enough drills for the full design. There were slightly more drills than needed, so it took longer than planned. The process was straightforward enough to do while chatting. It looks beautiful with a candle and a book on it. Small things aside, it’s a good buy.

This was a fun change of pace from the usual canvas kits. If you like abstract designs, this is a good one to go for. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Really nice piece to have out when people come over. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.

Finished it over a weekend and it looks great on the ottoman. The drills have a nice sparkle to them, not dull or flat. The sorting tray is shallow, drills spill out if you’re not careful. I set it up next to the window and do a few rows whenever the light is good. Gave it to my mom as a gift and it was a big hit. Would order again despite the small issues.

  10. Frances Short –

I use mine every morning for coffee. It’s sized right for two mugs and a small plate. Extra drills were included for every color, which I appreciated. This is a lovely contemporary piece for the price. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. It’s become the quiet part of my day that I look forward to. It adds a nice handmade touch to the room. Happy with it, with one small caveat.

  11. Miles Krause (verified owner) –

Added this to my cart at the last minute and I’m glad I did. I can carry a full mug without worrying about the handles. The drills are bright and consistent in size, no weird off-color batches. Genuinely peaceful to work on one row at a time. Handles are a bit narrow for larger hands. The handles make it genuinely useful, not just decorative. Good kit overall, just a couple of small things.

This was a fun change of pace from the usual canvas kits. Size is right for two mugs and a small plate. The tray included is on the small side. I brought it on a weekend trip and finished most of it there. Would order again despite the small issues.

  13. Jerome Craven (verified owner) –

Ordered this as a gift for a friend who loves a tidy house. The pen grip stayed comfortable through long sessions. It reads as a deliberate design choice, not a craft. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. This is a lovely abstract piece for the price. A solid purchase with a couple of notes.

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. The base is flat and doesn’t rock on the table. Really nice piece to have out when people come over. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Overall a good experience.

I took a chance on this and it paid off. It’s on our ottoman and gets used for coffee every morning. Shipping took a few days longer than I expected. I’d order again, just knowing what to expect.

Bought this for the guest room and it gets comments from visitors. The drilled panel is recessed so it’s protected from spills. A few drills had rough edges that needed picking off. The work is repetitive in a good way. Minor gripes aside, I’d buy it again.

This one caught my eye and I’m glad it did. If you like abstract designs, this is a good one to go for. The drilled panel is recessed so it’s protected from spills. The wax ran out before I finished and I had to use my own. Keeps my hands busy during long flights and hotel evenings. Gave it to my sister as a gift and it was a big hit. Good kit overall, just a couple of small things.

Bought this for our coffee table and it’s become a fixture. The adhesive is plenty sticky, the drills stay exactly where I put them. A peaceful project that fits into whatever time you have. A few bags weren’t labeled as clearly as the rest. I’d recommend it with that one note.

Bought it as a housewarming gift and it was a hit. The wood finish is smooth and looks properly done. The contemporary motif makes it feel special. The adhesive held firmly without any lifting at the edges. I’d have liked it a size larger. I found it genuinely enjoyable rather than just something to finish. Looks beautiful on the coffee table with a candle on it. Happy enough that I’d buy another.
