Why This Butterfly Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

Look at this Butterfly design and a butterfly with wings held open, each panel showing graded colour from deep centre to translucent edge, antennae and body picked out in fine detail is what registers first, with iridescent blues and violets shifting toward warm orange at the wing edges carrying the rest. The tone is delicate and alive throughout. Butterfly motifs work in the transitional spaces of a home — the places that do not need a theme, just something with life in it. It fits a kitchen that is used hard and hosted from often. Designed for hallways and entryways, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference CP14-1. Butterfly motifs work in the transitional spaces of a home — the places that do not need a theme, just something with life in it It is why the piece sits calmly in a room rather than announcing itself.

butterfly motifs work in the transitional spaces of a home — the places that do not need a theme, just something with life in it. It fits hallways and entryways on its own terms, which is the only test that matters.

Each DOTZSO tray kit is put together so nothing is missing and the finished piece takes hot mugs and plates. Alongside the tray you get DOTZSO resin drills, a sorting tray, a comfort-grip applicator pen, a wax caddy and pictorial instructions.

A tray stays out on the counter if it can take a hot mug. That is what the sealed surface and solid body are for.

Drilling the face in full is what gives the tray its solid, finished feel.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Go through it one colour block at a time, then let the finished tray earn its keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is anything for the Butterfly wooden tray kit purchased separately?

Yes. The Butterfly wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference CP14-1.

Will the Butterfly wooden tray kit look the same after a year of use?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the Butterfly design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. The Butterfly finish is designed to be used, not just looked at.

How do I protect the Butterfly finish long term?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the Butterfly palette, iridescent blues and violets shifting toward warm orange at the wing edges tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. The Butterfly finish prefers dry methods to wet ones.

Is the Butterfly surface fully worked, or is it a partial-drill piece?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The Butterfly artwork is drawn so that a butterfly with wings held open reads clearly at any distance. No part of the Butterfly face is left as bare board.

Does the Butterfly wooden tray kit suit someone with limited free time?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The Butterfly design is delicate and alive, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. The Butterfly pattern builds up quickly once the colour blocks start.

What is the largest Butterfly option available?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 9.8×13.8 in format. Reference CP14-1.

  1. Christopher H. (verified owner) –

This tray kit felt like a real step up from the flat canvases. Handles are cut well and comfortable to actually carry. Handles are a bit narrow for larger hands. The finished piece gets compliments from everyone who visits. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.

  2. Dominique Babcock (verified owner) –

Bought this as a birthday present to myself. The butterfly artwork comes together beautifully as you work. I’d have liked a slightly longer chart, but it was workable. Gave one as a housewarming gift and it was a favorite. Worth it, just go in with the right expectations.

  3. Briana Hannah –

This arrived on a rainy Tuesday and turned the week around. It’s on the bathroom counter and looks intentional. Not something to soak or put in the dishwasher. Would still recommend it.

  4. Mabel Oconnell (verified owner) –

This tray is the perfect size for the kitchen island. The corners are finished cleanly with no gaps. The colors stay true once it’s finished. There were slightly more drills than needed, so it took longer than planned. Would still recommend it.

  5. Lindsay Ferris (verified owner) –

I keep a project going at all times and this is the current one. The tweezers included were actually good quality. I worked on it while the kids did homework. It’s on our ottoman and gets used for coffee every morning. Only one finish is available, which is limiting. I’d order again, just knowing what to expect.

  6. Rosie Pitts –

The handles make it feel like real serveware, not just a craft. The tweezers included were actually good quality. The symbols on the chart were easy to follow from start to finish. I picked it up whenever I had a spare twenty minutes. This is a lovely butterfly piece for the price. This one might be my favorite finish yet. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. I’d recommend it with that one note.

  7. Tiffany C. (verified owner) –

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. Each color was packed generously, I had plenty to spare. I did this with my roommate on the weekends and we both got into it. My friends all want one now. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Good kit overall, just a couple of small things.

  8. Stevie Cahill (verified owner) –

Bought this to hold the remotes and it’s a huge improvement. The chart was large enough to read without squinting. This is the kind of craft that’s genuinely calming after a hectic day. One color had a couple of misshapen drills, but spares covered it. I’d order it again knowing what I know now.

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. Nice finish on the wood, not rough or unfinished. I work on it while listening to an audiobook and the time just disappears. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. Happy enough that I’d buy another.

  10. Kent Baxter (verified owner) –

Ordered it after seeing one a friend finished, and I get the appeal now. I use it for serving when we have people over. The winged element makes it feel personal. The rim could be a touch deeper. Still a good kit overall.

  11. Janine Miles (verified owner) –

I ordered this for my dresser and it’s become a centerpiece. The edges are sealed so nothing catches on them. The winged artwork is the reason I clicked. I finished it over a couple of weekends. A couple of the darker shades were hard to tell apart. It’s organized the whole surface with one addition. Would order again despite the small issues.

  12. Joyce K. (verified owner) –

I use mine for morning coffee and it’s held up well. The adhesive is plenty sticky, the drills stay exactly where I put them. I do it at the kitchen table while dinner simmers. Would make a really nice gift, and it arrives boxed nicely. The winged design is even prettier in person than in the photos. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Happy enough that I’d buy another.

  13. Conrad Robertson (verified owner) –

Gave one to my in-laws and they display it proudly. I gave one to my sister and she immediately ordered her own. The handles are a bit narrow for larger hands. Mild quibbles, but a good purchase.

  14. Stephanie P. (verified owner) –

So glad I added this one to my cart. Packaging was tidy and nothing had spilled in transit. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. It sits on the entry table and catches keys and mail. Still worth it overall.

  15. Claudia Harvey (verified owner) –

I’ve been doing these for about a year and this is a solid kit. The interior surface is smooth and easy to wipe down. The process was straightforward enough to do while chatting. It looks great from a distance and holds up close. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. Happy with it despite the small stuff.

  16. Rochelle Casey (verified owner) –

Not my first diamond painting, but one of my favorites. The artwork looks even better in person than the photos. The handles make it genuinely easy to carry. Handles are a bit narrow for larger hands. My mother-in-law displays hers proudly. Minor quibbles aside, I’d buy it again.

  17. Miguel N. (verified owner) –

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. Drill colors are well separated, no squinting to tell two shades apart. I work on it while listening to an audiobook and the time just disappears. I’ve had three people ask me where I bought it. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. Good kit overall, just a couple of small things.

  18. Pearlie Johnston (verified owner) –

Was looking for something to do with my hands in the evenings. The drill panel sits flush with the tray surface. It’s become the quiet part of my day that I look forward to. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Overall a good experience.

Really impressed with how solid the tray feels. The drill design sits flush with the tray surface. I wish the printed legend was a little bigger. The winged subject is rendered with more detail than I expected. My friends all want one now. Still a solid purchase.

So glad I added this one to my cart. No missing colors and no shortage on the ones used most. Handles are a bit narrow for larger hands. It’s a lovely quiet hobby, and I like having something to show for it at the end. Gave it as a housewarming gift and it was the favorite present. I’d recommend it with that one note.

  21. Glenda Burgess (verified owner) –

Ordered two of these and gave one away as a gift. The wood is thick and sanded smooth, no splinters. I use it for serving when we have guests and it always gets noticed. The adhesive picked up a bit of dust while I was working over several days. Happy with it, with one small caveat.

  22. Ollie Weber (verified owner) –

My third kit from this shop and still really pleased. Everyone who sees it asks how long it took. The pen that came with it is a bit flimsy, I swapped in my own. Worth it despite the small things.

  23. Stacy B. (verified owner) –

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. The drill design sits flush with the tray surface. It’s a slow, quiet hobby and I like that about it. The butterfly detail comes together really nicely once it’s finished. There were slightly more drills than needed, so it took longer than planned. Still worth it overall.

  24. Melba Jacobs (verified owner) –

My sister got me into these and this is my latest one. Handles are sturdy, I can carry a full mug without worrying. I’ve been doing it in the evenings with my partner, we take turns on sections. Only small gripe is that a few drills had little burrs on them. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

Made this for our coffee table and get compliments on it constantly. Nice finish on the wood, not rough or unfinished. Nice to have something that gets me off my phone for a while. Great value for what you get. Handles are a bit narrow for larger hands. Overall a good experience.

  26. Leonard Sanchez (verified owner) –

The tray format is such a nice change of pace. The drills arrived clean, not stuck together in clumps. Everything felt well made, from the tools to the drills. Took a bit longer to arrive than I expected. I did most of it over a lazy weekend and enjoyed every minute. Great gift for anyone who likes hosting. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.

  27. Salvador Hodges (verified owner) –

This tray kit felt like a real step up from the flat canvases. Solid wood, much better than the pressed board versions. Quiet Sunday mornings with this and a coffee is my favorite part of the week. It’s on the coffee table and gets used every morning. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. I’d recommend it with that one note.

  28. Wyatt Mccarthy (verified owner) –

I use mine every morning for coffee. I went with the butterfly version and the colors are lovely. Nice finish on the wood, not rough or unfinished. It’s a calm, repetitive hobby and that’s exactly what I wanted. One small scuff on the wood when it arrived. It adds a nice handmade touch to the room. Would order again despite the small issues.
