Why This House in the Woods Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

The House in the Woods motif is a cabin tucked among tall pines, roof and chimney visible between the trunks with a path leading to the door, the colouring is deep forest green and timber brown with warm window light against a dusk sky, and the overall bearing is secluded and cosy. Cabins in woodland carry a very specific kind of quiet, and the lit window is the detail that sells it. It appeals to anyone who wants a piece of homeware with a story attached. Designed for dens, cabins and reading rooms, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference CP24-2. cabins in woodland carry a very specific kind of quiet, and the lit window is the detail that sells it It is a small thing, and it is the reason the design holds together.

cabins in woodland carry a very specific kind of quiet, and the lit window is the detail that sells it. It is why the piece settles into dens, cabins and reading rooms without needing the rest of the scheme to match it.

With DOTZSO, the kit contents and the pacing are set so the whole thing stays enjoyable. You receive the printed wooden tray, DOTZSO resin drills, a sorting tray, a comfort-grip pen, a wax caddy and clear pictorial instructions.

A tray stays out on the counter if it can take a hot mug. That is what the sealed surface and solid body are for.

Full drill coverage across the tray face is what gives it an even finish rather than bare wood showing through.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Finish it at an easy pace, then let the tray carry breakfast rather than look at it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the wooden tray kit include the accessories too?

Yes. The House in the Woods wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference CP24-2.

Are the drills on the House in the Woods design fixed firmly once completed?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the House in the Woods design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. The House in the Woods finish is designed to be used, not just looked at.

Does the House in the Woods finish need any special treatment?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the House in the Woods palette, deep forest green and timber brown tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. Store it dry and the House in the Woods piece needs very little attention.

Does the House in the Woods wooden tray kit leave any background uncovered?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The House in the Woods artwork is drawn so that a cabin tucked among tall pines reads clearly at any distance. The House in the Woods piece reads as complete once the drilling is done.

How much time does the House in the Woods design demand?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The House in the Woods design is secluded and cosy, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. The House in the Woods pattern builds up quickly once the colour blocks start.

Which House in the Woods size works for everyday use?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 12.2×16.1 in format. Reference CP24-2.

I’ve done a handful of these now and this one is up there with the best. Very pleased with how it came together. Only small gripe is that a few drills had little burrs on them. I’d recommend it with that one note.

This was my first diamond painting kit and I’m officially hooked. The handles make it genuinely practical, not just decorative. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. Happy enough that I’d buy another.

  3. Jacob A. –

Made this for our coffee table and get compliments on it constantly. Nothing arrived damaged, and everything was sealed properly. I’ll be buying more from this shop. Wish it came with a protective finish already applied. Good kit overall, just a couple of small things.

  4. ScrapbookSue (verified owner) –

I picked this up on a whim and ended up really enjoying it. Nothing arrived damaged, and everything was sealed properly. Glue coverage was even, no dry patches anywhere. It’s the kind of project that feels creative without being stressful. The wood arrived with one small scuff on the side. I keep remotes and coasters on mine when it’s not in use. Still worth it overall.

I’ve done a handful of these now and this one is up there with the best. Nice finish on the wood, not rough or unfinished. Wish it came with a protective finish already applied. Really relaxing to do in the evening instead of scrolling. Would order again despite the small issues.

This was a fun change of pace from the usual canvas kits. The drilled panel is recessed so it’s protected from spills. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Really relaxing to do in the evening instead of scrolling. Looks beautiful on the coffee table with a candle on it. I’d recommend it with that one note.

  7. Carol Cahill (verified owner) –

Really impressed with how solid the tray feels. The canvas print is sharp and the symbols are legible. It looks lovely on the dresser. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. A good buy, with one or two caveats.

  8. Gabrielle Clark (verified owner) –

This tray kit felt like a real step up from the flat canvases. It holds everything it needs to without looking cluttered. The corners collect a little dust that’s fiddly to reach. Solid overall, just a couple of nitpicks.

This was a fun change of pace from the usual canvas kits. No missing colors and nothing short in the high-use shades. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’ll set wet glasses on it. I put on an audiobook and worked through it in a few sittings. Worth it despite the small things.

The wood base makes this feel like real decor. It’s become one of my favorite things in the house. I’d have liked it a size larger. Overall a good experience.

  11. Wanda Lowe (verified owner) –

Bought this to hold the remotes and it’s a huge improvement. The chart was large enough to read without squinting. I listened to a podcast and the time went by without noticing. Finished piece looks even better in person than in the listing photos. I wish the printed legend was a little bigger. Small things aside, it’s a good buy.

  12. George Pruitt (verified owner) –

I use mine every morning for coffee. The proportions work well for a dresser or a vanity. The tray and tweezers included were better than I expected. I’d have preferred more spare drills in the least-used color. Perfect for slow evenings when you don’t want more screen time. Makes a lovely breakfast-in-bed tray. Still a solid purchase.

  13. Kim Carter (verified owner) –

I bought this to organize my nightstand and it looks lovely. The wood finish is smooth and looks properly done. Nice to have a hobby that leaves you calmer than you started. It needed a wipe down before the first use. I’d order again, just knowing what to expect.

  14. Eileen Green –

Saw a finished version online and tracked down this kit the same day. The tray has real weight to it, feels like serveware. One small scuff on the wood when it arrived. The repetitive motion is oddly satisfying, one of those simple pleasures. It came out better than the product photos suggested. Would recommend it with those notes.

  15. Isaiah W. –

Came quickly and was packaged really well. Nothing arrived damaged, and everything was sealed properly. Did most of it over a long weekend and it was such a pleasant way to pass the time. Took me a while to get the hang of the multi-placer tip. Made one for my mother-in-law and she was delighted. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

  16. Doyle Steele (verified owner) –

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. No missing colors and nothing short in the high-use shades. Some colors came with barely any extras, though I didn’t run out. The work is repetitive in a good way. I’d order it again knowing what I know now.

  17. Lily Tucker (verified owner) –

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. The kit came complete, nothing extra needed from the craft store. This is the kind of craft that’s genuinely calming after a hectic day. It’s on our ottoman and gets used for coffee every morning. One small scuff on the wood when it arrived. Minor quibbles aside, I’d buy it again.

Grabbed this on a whim after a long week. Colors are distinct enough that I never mixed two shades up. Good quality drills with clean edges, not chipped. It’s slightly heavier than I expected. It’s a calm, repetitive hobby and that’s exactly what I wanted. It adds a nice handmade touch to the room. Small issues, but nothing that would stop me ordering again.

  19. Stacie Mcbride (verified owner) –

Bought this for our coffee table and it’s become a fixture. Plenty of margin around the edges for framing or trimming. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. I set it up next to the window and do a few rows whenever the light is good. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

The handles make it feel like real serveware, not just a craft. Wood feels solid, much better than the thin pressed board I’ve seen. It’s a slow, quiet hobby and I like that about it. Took a bit longer to arrive than I expected. Worth it, just go in with the right expectations.

I’ve been doing these for about a year and this is a solid kit. The handles make it genuinely easy to carry. Nice to have a hobby that leaves you calmer than you started. I wish it came pre-sealed. Overall happy, just a few small things.

  22. Julio Ingram (verified owner) –

This was a practical project and it turned out prettier than expected. The wood is thick and sanded smooth, no splinters. A few bags weren’t labeled as clearly as the rest. I brought it on a weekend trip and finished most of it there. Mild quibbles, but a good purchase.

This one caught my eye and I’m glad it did. No missing colors and nothing short in the high-use shades. I did a section a night and looked forward to it each time. It holds up to a close look, which matters more than I expected. The corners collect a little dust that’s fiddly to reach. Would order again despite the small issues.

Not my first diamond painting, but one of my favorites. Size is right for two mugs and a small plate. Gave one as a housewarming gift and it was a favorite. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Worth it despite the small things.

This tray is the perfect size for the kitchen island. The drills are bright and consistent in size, no weird off-color batches. Some colors came with barely any extras, though I didn’t run out. Perfect for winding down before bed, much better than watching another show. Good kit — the notes above are minor.

Bought it as a housewarming gift and it was a hit. The drills have a nice sparkle to them, not dull or flat. No missing colors and no shortage on the ones used most. I do this on the porch in the summer and it’s lovely. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Holds two mugs and a plate easily. Overall a good experience.

Bought this for our coffee table and it’s become a fixture. The backing held up fine and didn’t peel anywhere. Nice mindful project – you can’t think about much else while you’re placing drills. Some colors had very few spare drills. Makes a lovely gift for anyone who hosts. Still a good kit overall.

This arrived on a rainy Tuesday and turned the week around. The finish looks polished rather than homemade. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. Genuinely peaceful to work on one row at a time. Overall a good experience.

Something about a functional project makes it more satisfying. Solid wood, much better than the pressed board versions. The colors are true to the listing photos. I did this with my aunt on the weekends and we both got into it. There were slightly more drills than needed, so it took longer than planned. I use it for serving when we have people over. Still a solid purchase.

Wasn’t sure what to expect, but I’m very happy with it. The base is flat and doesn’t rock on the table. I found it really peaceful to focus on one small area at a time. The wax ran out before I finished and I had to use my own. It’s become a fixture in the living room. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.
