Why This Underwater Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

What the design does with a submerged scene with coral forms rising through drifting kelp, small fish threading between them and light breaking down from the surface is the point, and deep teal and marine blue graduating to pale turquoise, with coral accents is where the colour settles. A cool and immersive piece, in the plain sense. Underwater scenes work as escapist decor, and the graded light is what makes them convincing. It fits a kitchen that is used hard and hosted from often. Designed for bathrooms and calm living spaces, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference CP20-2. Underwater scenes work as escapist decor, and the graded light is what makes them convincing Which is the harder half of the job, and it is done here.

underwater scenes work as escapist decor, and the graded light is what makes them convincing. It slots into bathrooms and calm living spaces because the cool palette is doing the talking.

Each DOTZSO tray kit is put together so nothing is missing and the finished piece takes hot mugs and plates. Alongside the tray you get DOTZSO resin drills, a sorting tray, a comfort-grip applicator pen, a wax caddy and pictorial instructions.

A tray stays out on the counter if it can take a hot mug. That is what the sealed surface and solid body are for.

Drilling the face in full is what gives the tray its solid, finished feel.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Go through it one colour block at a time, then let the finished tray earn its keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the wooden tray kit supplied ready to work on, with no gaps?

Yes. The Underwater wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference CP20-2.

How well does the Underwater design survive handling?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the Underwater design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. Give the seal a full cure and the Underwater finish will hold.

Does the Underwater wooden tray kit need special care?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the Underwater palette, deep teal and marine blue graduating to pale turquoise, tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. A microfibre cloth works well on the Underwater surface.

Does the Underwater artwork have unworked sections?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The Underwater artwork is drawn so that a submerged scene with coral forms rising through drifting kelp reads clearly at any distance. No background area of the Underwater design is left bare.

How quickly can the Underwater design be completed?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The Underwater design is cool and immersive, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. The Underwater pattern is easy to work in short bursts.

How do I choose between Underwater sizes?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 12.2×16.1 in format. Reference CP20-2.

The handles make it feel like real serveware, not just a craft. Handles make it easy to carry from the kitchen to the couch. I set it up next to the window and do a few rows whenever the light is good. The wood arrived with one small scuff on the side. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

Honestly better quality than I expected for the price. Makes a lovely gift for anyone who hosts. One small scuff on the wood when it arrived. Happy enough that I’d buy another.

  3. Layla Rendon (verified owner) –

This was a fun change of pace from the usual canvas kits. The canvas print is sharp and the symbols are legible. The pen and wax worked fine, I didn’t need to dig out my own tools. Genuinely peaceful to work on one row at a time. I’d have preferred more spare drills in the least-used color. I’ll be ordering from this shop again. Minor quibbles aside, I’d buy it again.

Found this while browsing and couldn’t leave without it. The packaging kept everything organized and undamaged. It’s tidied up a spot that had been a mess for months. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

  5. Julie Gomez –

Ordered on a Monday, had it by the weekend. The handles make it genuinely easy to carry. I keep it by my chair and pick it up whenever I have a few minutes. One small scuff on the wood when it arrived. It’s on the bathroom counter and looks intentional. Happy with it, with one small caveat.

This was a fun change of pace from the usual canvas kits. The handles are cut comfortably and easy to grip. It’s the piece that made the entryway feel finished. It needed a wipe down before the first use. Still a solid purchase.

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. The handles make it genuinely practical, not just decorative. Took a bit longer to arrive than I expected. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

This one caught my eye and I’m glad it did. The kit came complete, nothing extra needed from the craft store. Wish it came with a protective finish already applied. It sits on the entry table and catches keys and mail. Good enough that I’d buy another.

This one took a bit more time and was worth it. The size is right for the space I had in mind. The adhesive picked up lint over the days I worked on it. My friends all want one now. Happy with it despite the small stuff.

Such a nice little project to have on the go. Handles are sturdy, I can carry a full mug without worrying. I do this while listening to music and the time disappears. Some colors came with barely any extras, though I didn’t run out. Worth it, just go in with the right expectations.

Really impressed with how solid the tray feels. It sits on the entry table and catches keys and mail. It’s slightly heavier than I expected. Still a good kit overall.

Bought it for the guest room and it looks lovely there. It’s the kind of thing people ask about when they see it. There were slightly more drills than needed, so it took longer than planned. Still a solid purchase.

This was a birthday gift to myself and it hit the spot. Good quality drills with clean edges, not chipped. Going to order a few more for Christmas presents. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Would recommend it with those notes.

Bought this for our coffee table and it’s become a fixture. Made one for my mother-in-law and she was delighted. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

  15. Gretchen Sawyer (verified owner) –

Made this as a wedding gift and it was a big hit. The drills arrived clean, not stuck together in clumps. It sits by the door catching keys and mail. A few drills had rough edges that needed picking off. Still a good kit overall.

Been doing these for about two years and this kit is solid. Gave it as a housewarming gift and it was the favorite present. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Worth it, just go in with the right expectations.

I don’t usually leave reviews but this one deserved it. Surface is flat and level, glasses don’t wobble on it. The colors work beautifully with the room. A few bags weren’t labeled as clearly as the rest. Small issues, but nothing that would stop me ordering again.

  18. Martin Carter –

This was a fun change of pace from the usual canvas kits. The adhesive is plenty sticky, the drills stay exactly where I put them. Glue coverage was even, no dry patches anywhere. I do a section after work with a cup of tea and it’s a nice way to unwind. I keep remotes and coasters on mine when it’s not in use. Wish it came with a protective finish already applied. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

Bought it as a housewarming gift and it was a hit. Colors match the listing photo really closely. It looks beautiful with a candle and a book on it. There were slightly more drills than needed, so it took longer than planned. Small issues, but nothing that would stop me ordering again.

  20. Juan Cooper (verified owner) –

Finished it over a weekend and it looks great on the ottoman. Colors are distinct enough that I never mixed two shades up. I keep it set up on a side table and do a bit whenever I have ten minutes. The canvas had a faint mark from the printing on one edge. Good kit overall, just a couple of small things.

  21. Lula Moss (verified owner) –

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. The drills are bright and consistent in size, no weird off-color batches. Some colors had very few spare drills. This is the kind of craft that’s genuinely calming after a hectic day. Happy with it, with one small caveat.

I use mine every morning for coffee. Wood feels solid, much better than the thin pressed board I’ve seen. Really relaxing to do in the evening instead of scrolling. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Still a good kit overall.
