Why This Underwater Tray Earns Its Place on the Table

A Underwater layout organised around a submerged scene with coral forms rising through drifting kelp, small fish threading between them and light breaking down from the surface, pitched in deep teal and marine blue graduating to pale turquoise, with coral accents. The character stays cool and immersive rather than asking for attention. Underwater scenes work as escapist decor, and the graded light is what makes them convincing. It is designed for daily service rather than occasional entertaining. Designed for bathrooms and calm living spaces, it holds up as decor rather than as something you finish and put in a drawer. Reference CP20-1. underwater scenes work as escapist decor, and the graded light is what makes them convincing So the design has a reason to look the way it does.

underwater scenes work as escapist decor, and the graded light is what makes them convincing. Left out in bathrooms and calm living spaces, it keeps the cool note going without any effort from you.

This DOTZSO kit suits anyone who likes a project that improves the room when it is done. The kit includes the printed wooden tray, DOTZSO resin drills, a sorting tray, a comfort-grip applicator pen, a wax caddy and pictorial steps.

The tray body is the part that matters. The printed surface is sealed after the drills are seated, so the tray takes hot mugs and plates without marking.

Working the base in full drill is what makes the tray look made rather than part-finished.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 × printed wooden tray with cut-in handles
  • DOTZSO signature resin drills, sorted by colour (with extra drills included)
  • Diamond painting tray
  • Comfort-grip applicator pen
  • Wax caddy
  • Pictorial step-by-step instructions

How to Make It

  1. Lay the printed tray face flat and let it settle before starting.
  2. Find the legend strip and match the first symbol to its drill colour.
  3. Press the pen tip into the wax caddy, then touch it to a drill – the drill lifts and stays on the tip.
  4. Set the drill onto the matching printed symbol and press lightly. Work one colour block at a time rather than across the whole tray.
  5. Continue until the face is covered, then press the finished surface flat with a book for an hour to seat every drill.
  6. Seal the surface fully before the tray goes into service, or the drills will lift under a plate.

Take it one colour at a time, and let the finished tray move onto the counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Underwater wooden tray kit sold as a complete kit rather than in pieces?

Yes. The Underwater wooden tray kit ships complete with the wooden tray and cut-in handles; you drill the printed face and then the tray goes into service, plus the DOTZSO resin drills, tray, applicator pen, wax caddy and pictorial instructions. Nothing else needs sourcing. Reference CP20-1.

Will the Underwater wooden tray kit keep its finish with regular contact?

Once the drills are seated and the surface is sealed, the Underwater design holds under normal use. The surface is sealed, so it handles mugs and plates in normal use. Very hot pans straight from the hob are another matter — use a trivet, and the sealing step is the single biggest factor in how long the finish lasts. Sealing is the step that decides the Underwater finish’s lifespan.

What products are safe on the Underwater finish?

Wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately. Do not submerge it or put it through a dishwasher — the adhesive layer under the drills is not built for a soak. For the Underwater palette, deep teal and marine blue graduating to pale turquoise, tones show dust less than pale grounds, so a light pass is usually enough. Nothing abrasive should touch the Underwater surface.

Does the Underwater design leave any part untreated?

The face is drilled across the whole surface, so the finished tray has complete coverage without bare wood showing. The Underwater artwork is drawn so that a submerged scene with coral forms rising through drifting kelp reads clearly at any distance. The Underwater pattern is worked uniformly, with no gaps left.

How does the Underwater design fit around a busy week?

Plan for a few sessions rather than one. Working a single colour block at a time is faster than moving across the tray at random. The Underwater design is cool and immersive, which tends to make it easier to work in short sessions. The Underwater design is paced, not rushed.

How much surface does the Underwater wooden tray kit cover?

The range covers 7.8 × 11.8 in, 9.8 × 13.8 in and 12.2 × 16.1 in, so there is a format for a bedside table or a full dinner service. This listing is the 9.8×13.8 in format. Reference CP20-1.

I’ve been doing these for about a year and this is a solid kit. Good weight to the materials, it doesn’t feel cheap. The wax ran out before I finished and I had to use my own. Really nice piece to have out when people come over. I’d recommend it with that one note.

I’ve tried a few brands and this one holds up well. The base is flat and doesn’t rock on the table. No missing colors and no shortage on the ones used most. Quiet Sunday mornings with this and a coffee is my favorite part of the week. Only small gripe is that a few drills had little burrs on them. I’ve had three people ask me where I bought it. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

  3. Sofia D. (verified owner) –

The wood base is much sturdier than I expected. Gave it as a housewarming gift and it was the favorite present. The wood arrived with one small scuff on the side. Happy enough that I’d buy another.

Picked this up because I wanted a hobby that didn’t involve a screen. The proportions work well for a dresser or a vanity. It’s my screen-free hour in the evening. I’ll be ordering from this shop again. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Small issues, but nothing that would stop me ordering again.

  5. Bryce Dillon –

Bought it for a rainy weekend and it was exactly what I needed. I can carry a full mug without worrying about the handles. I work on it after dinner and it helps me switch off. Made one for my mother-in-law and she was delighted. One bag of drills had come open in transit. Still a good kit overall.

Heavier and nicer in person than it looked online. The tray doesn’t flex or bow when I pick it up. It’s my screen-free hour in the evening. Already ordered another one from DOTZSO. Only small gripe is that a few drills had little burrs on them. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.

I keep coming back to this shop because the quality is consistent. Everything I needed was in the box – pen, wax, tray and tweezers. It would help to include a larger paper chart. It looks like a piece of decor, not a storage solution. Good kit — the notes above are minor.

Honestly better quality than I expected for the price. I use it for serving when we have guests and it always gets noticed. The wax ran out before I finished and I had to use my own. Overall a good experience.

Made one for my sister and now she wants the kit too. Handles are sturdy, I can carry a full mug without worrying. I take it to my book club and work on it while we chat. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Worth it, just go in with the right expectations.

I’ve wanted one of these trays for ages and finally made one. It sits by the door catching keys and mail. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Still a solid purchase.

I added this to my cart at 11pm and had zero regrets the next morning. The handles are cut comfortably and easy to grip. I wish it came pre-sealed. It was a pleasant way to spend a slow afternoon. The end result made all the evenings worth it. I’d recommend it with that one note.

  12. Bryan Prescott (verified owner) –

This came recommended in a crafting group I follow. Extra drills were included for every color, which I appreciated. I worked on this with my mother and we both got absorbed in it. I’d have liked a slightly longer chart, but it was workable. A good buy, with one or two caveats.

  13. Michele Crowell –

Picked this up before a long flight and it saved the trip. The legend was easy to follow and matched the canvas printing. A couple of the darker shades were hard to tell apart. It looks like something you’d buy, not something you assembled. A solid purchase with a couple of notes.

  14. Angelo Gallagher (verified owner) –

I picked this up on a whim and ended up really enjoying it. The drills are bright and consistent in size, no weird off-color batches. It needed a wipe down before the first use. Worth the time it took. Good kit — the notes above are minor.

This one caught my eye and I’m glad it did. Holds two mugs and a plate easily. Some colors came with barely any extras, though I didn’t run out. Worth buying, just plan for those small quirks.

Not my first diamond painting, but one of my favorites. It’s become a fixture in the living room. Handles are a bit narrow for larger hands. Happy with it, with a few caveats.

The wood base makes this feel like real decor. It holds two mugs and a plate with room to spare. I wish it came pre-sealed. Still a good kit overall.

The handles make it feel like real serveware, not just a craft. The drills sit nice and flush, no gaps showing the surface underneath. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. Really relaxing to do in the evening instead of scrolling. Makes a lovely breakfast-in-bed tray. Minor things, but I’d still buy it again.

Was looking for something to do with my hands in the evenings. Drill colors are well separated, no squinting to tell two shades apart. The drilled panel sits slightly proud of the rim. It’s earned a spot on the wall. Overall a good experience.

Picked this up for our coffee table and it ties the room together. Everyone who sees it asks where it came from. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’ll set wet glasses on it. Overall a good experience.

I’ve bought from this shop a few times now and this is another good one. I use it for serving when we have people over. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. Worth it despite the small things.

Second time ordering this style, still happy with it. Size is right for two mugs and a small plate. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’re putting wet glasses on it. Nice to have a hobby that leaves you calmer than you started. Small issues, but nothing that would stop me ordering again.

This tray kit felt like a real step up from the flat canvases. Really nice piece to have out when people come over. You’ll want to seal it yourself if you’ll set wet glasses on it. Overall happy, just a few small things.

The wood base is much sturdier than I expected. The wood base has a nice weight to it, feels like real serveware. Not something I’d put in the dishwasher or soak, obviously. Really relaxing to do in the evening instead of scrolling. Overall a good experience.

Came quickly and was packaged really well. The legend was easy to follow and matched the canvas printing. I’ve been doing it in the evenings with my partner, we take turns on sections. It makes a lovely gift and arrives nicely packaged. The wax ran out before I finished and I had to use my own. I’d order again, just knowing what to expect.

  27. Joel Young (verified owner) –

This was my first tray kit and I’d do another. The wood is thick and sanded smooth, no splinters. Everything felt well made, from the tools to the drills. I set aside twenty minutes a night for this and it’s become a ritual. Some colors came with barely any extras, though I didn’t run out. Everyone who sees it asks how long it took. Happy with it, with one small caveat.

  28. Willard Burton (verified owner) –

Really impressed with how solid the tray feels. The handles are cut comfortably and easy to grip. I worked through this over a few weeks of evenings and loved it. A couple of the darker shades were hard to tell apart in low light. It looks like something from a home decor shop. Happy with it, with one small caveat.

  29. Donna Donovan –

Was looking for something to do with my hands in the evenings. Wood feels solid, much better than the thin pressed board I’ve seen. Some colors had very few spare drills. I set it up next to the window and do a few rows whenever the light is good. Good kit overall, just a couple of small things.
